Those of us with oily skin know that there is a very fine line between having dewy skin and an overly shiny face. Having oily skin is not a bad thing; in fact, it has several benefits. The problem arises when this skin type becomes imbalanced. Today, I’m sharing some Twelve tips on how to care for oily skin to avoid excess sebum and reclaim your glow.
Although we have discussed how to care for oily skin in some past articles, lately, seeing an increase in the number of online consultations from people suffering from excess sebum, I have decided to update the previously published information, thus creating what I like to call the Oily Skin Decalogue.
1 – DELICATE BUT EFFECTIVE
Try not to unnecessarily irritate your skin. Cleansing itself is already considered an aggressive act for the skin, so it's better to provide a delicate yet effective cleanse, avoiding harsh soaps and other strong ingredients that can lead to counterproductive results. I recommend using Purifying Cleansing Beauty Cream to replenish key lipids in the skin and maintain a healthy hydrolipidic film. Whatever product you use, make sure to rinse it off thoroughly, otherwise, it can block hair follicles.
2 – THE RIGHT BALANCE OF BACTERIA
In my opinion, one of the key steps to caring for oily skin is to include products containing ingredients like willowherb extract in your daily facial routine. This controls sebum production and reduces the amount of "bad" bacteria like Cutibacterium acnes. Therefore, the product I most recommend for this skin type is the Ideal Rebalancing Level Serum.
3 – CARE FOR YOUR PORES
Give your pores extra pampering by applying a thin layer of Clementine Cleansing Balm and letting it sit for a few minutes before removing it with a muslin cloth. This allows it time to penetrate deeply into the pores and dissolve all the dirt inside (dead cells, oxidized sebum, product residue, and makeup).
4 – LESS IS MORE
Reduce makeup, as certain types of products clog pores.
5 – OILS TO THE RESCUE!
Although it may seem counterintuitive, treating oily skin with an oil can be very beneficial! Oily skin is characterized by an excessive amount of oleic acid, so incorporating an oil rich in linoleic acid into your beauty routine is highly recommended. Let's make way for the Intelligent Frontier Facial Oil.
6 – FAN OF ESSENTIAL OILS?
If you love using essential oils in your skincare routine, there are some very good ones capable of balancing excess sebum production. My favorites are sage, lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, cypress, and tea tree, and they are all well-known and accessible! However, remember to stick to the recommended dosages and do a skin patch test first, as with any new product you want to incorporate into your routine.
7 – A FACIAL MASSAGE AT HOME
Despite the wide range of sophisticated beauty products available today with names that sound like science fiction, there is nothing better than a traditional clay-based facial mask. And if you find an innovative mask, like The London Mask, even better!
8 – ALWAYS READ THE LABEL
Be careful with products specifically formulated for oily skin. Sometimes they can cause an opposite effect, especially those formulated to give a "quick fix," such as those containing alcohol, harsh surfactants, or astringents like anise, hawthorn, etc.
9 – AVOID POLLUTED ENVIRONMENTS
Pollution particles adhere to the upper layers of the skin, causing even more oil to be produced!
10 – RELAX
Several studies indicate a strong link between high stress levels and acne breakouts. Stress often negatively affects hormones, which in turn leads to an increase in sebum production, leaving you with a shiny face, congested pores, and even some pimples.
