Melasma and how to treat it

El melasma y cómo tratarlo

Although melanin is more stimulated during the summer months and melasma is more evident, its symptoms persist during the colder months, and now is also the time to prevent it from worsening during the summer months.

Melasma represents a typical case of localized skin hyperpigmentation, affecting more or less extensive areas of the epidermis. It mainly appears in pregnant women, but also in men. It is also more commonly associated with darker skin, but this does not mean that fair skin tones are immune. In other words, potentially we are all at risk of melasma.

Many factors contribute to its appearance:

– HORMONAL: Imbalances related to estrogens, either due to pregnancy or contraceptive treatment.

– GENETIC: If there are people with melasma in your family, you are at greater risk.

– SUN RAYS: The sun is one of the most important factors and influences the intensity of hyperpigmentation.

Other possible factors:

– STRESS: Studies have recently emerged that indicate a correlation between long periods of stress and melasma.

– THYROID.

– Use of allergenic or poor-quality COSMETIC substances.

– Some MEDICATIONS.

What to use with caution:

Hydroquinone and kojic acid are very effective, but both have side effects such as irritation, dermatitis and in more extreme cases facial discoloration.

Exfoliating acids such as glycolic acid, salicylic and mandelic acid offer good results, but always controlled.

In the case of laser treatment, it is important that the equipment and the lamp are new, otherwise it can aggravate the problem.

Sun protection, all year round and with quality products, otherwise they can irritate the skin.

Makeup: It can unify the tone and conceal melasma, but beware of some pigments that can cause skin inflammation and worsen it.

Our recommendations:

Ideal Brightening Corrective Serum: An ultra-light, highly hydrating fluid packed with botanical extracts capable of blocking excessive melanin production. Daily use helps minimize the appearance of spots. It can be used during the day and contains no ingredients that could interfere in case of pregnancy and lactation.

The London Mask: Handcrafted, it allows to obtain the results provided by clays without their "secondary" effects of dryness or tightness. The light but effective exfoliation that its use provides reduces the intensity of the spots.
