More than a new normal, I like to call it a new reality, since it has very little "normality" about it, and it is to the continuous use of masks and other protective equipment that I dedicate this blog post. In recent months, the appearance (or worsening in some cases of existing conditions) of redness, pimples, blackheads, or what some have already dubbed 'maskne' has multiplied. If you are one of those with rebellious skin at the moment, read on to find out how to treat and prevent mask acne.
Known in the medical world as 'acne mechanica' or 'friction acne', 'maskne' is the result of the continuous rubbing of the mask against the skin (the dreaded friction), combined with the humid environment generated inside it. The fact that our face is not accustomed to the rubbing of fabrics and that heat, sweat, and breath get trapped inside the mask not only leads to an increase in sebaceous secretion and hyperkeratinization but also causes inflammation, small wounds, and extreme dryness. In short, our skin barrier becomes compromised and weak.
Lately, here at Twelve Beauty, we have observed an increase in our free online skin consultation service, from people whose faces have become very reactive due to wearing masks. For this reason, we propose a "mask-friendly" facial care, designed to counteract the adverse effects they have on our skin and make it less vulnerable. (Since all indications are that masks are here to stay).
Our suggestion for getting maskne under control and saying goodbye to mask acne is to follow the routine below (especially at night):
Step 1: Clementine Cleansing Balm. A fantastic product for removing blackheads (which are considered precursors of acne) and providing a deep cleanse to the skin. The oils it contains have the ability to effectively penetrate pores and gently melt away impurities inside (mature cells, dirt, pollution, oxidized sebum, SPF, and remnants of other beauty products, etc.). We recommend leaving it on for 5 to 10 minutes so that the formula penetrates the pores and dissolves all impurities, before removing it with your Twelve muslin cloth.
Step 2: Apply Ideal Rebalancing Level Serum as its high content of epilobium extract and plant polysaccharides helps restore the natural balance of the skin's microbiota, inhibiting bad strains, promoting good bacteria, and creating a protective film thanks to high molecular weight hyaluronic acid. 3 or 4 drops of this serum would be enough to treat the entire face.
Step 3: Finally, remember that the skin's protective barrier is hydrolipidic: It contains water and oil. Therefore, we recommend using a correctly formulated moisturizer that contains both substances, such as Nutritive Repair Emulsion and boosting its regenerative effects even further by adding a few drops of Intelligent Frontier Facial Oil. Both products help prevent and calm redness, reducing skin sensitivity, while the oil has a high repairing power, making the internal structure of the skin, its foundations, strong, and less vulnerable to external factors.
Finally, we emphasize the importance of changing or washing your mask frequently, reducing stress, and remembering that the key to healthy and balanced skin is to consistently follow an appropriate facial routine.
